Communities have many faces, issues and perspectives. They do, however, have common problems. Problems of uncared for sections of society; problems of inadequately trained social and community workers; problems of finance. Together these problems act to weaken any help that is provided to the community. For a holistic solution to urban poverty, stronger communities are required.
Mayflower will have four key initiatives that between them begin to assist in strengthening local communities. Initiatives for the support of orphans and vulnerable children; support and development of Community Based Organisations; creation of recycling markets and initiatives to improve community markets and transport.
The emphasis of Mayflower is that these initiatives will be delivered within a targeted community, in the first instance in Ebute-Metta.
Ebute-Metta has sections that are so poor they aren’t even shown on any official maps of Lagos and probably not accurately recorded on the latest census. The only way this will change is for the community to be trained to help itself. The local citizens know the issues and what needs to be done to improve the quality of their lives.
