Community Based Organisations are best placed to understand and respond to community needs. They are the frontline, grassroot organisations which can be supported either directly or through intermediary NGOs. Building their capacity and mentoring their staff, often women, is especially critical in community development. Experience has shown that larger NGOs often cannot engage effectively in communities but they can help CBOs.
Support of CBOs is one of the four key priorities for Mayflower. It is hoped to raise US$1,000,000 per annum for a period of 5 years to provide support for the Development of CBOs in Ebute-Metta. Per annum it is hoped that up to 500 community workers can be trained. Each trained CBO worker, possibly supervised by large NGOs, should be able to benefit at least 50 people in their community.
