There is value in waste which individuals and communities can benefit from. Economic and environmental benefit. From the daily waste we all produce, high value plastics, paper and cardboard can be collected, pre‐processed, marketed and sold. In addition, companies need to be educated to recover and re-use discarded waste materials, for example, boxes, containers and packaging. Generally, the economic benefits of recycling and recovery more than offset the cost of the initiatives.
Mayflower hopes to raise US$200,000 per annum for a period of 5 years to provide support for the creation of recycling markets in Ebute-Metta. Per annum it is hoped that 200 small recycling businesses can be established in the community. The benefits are both direct for the new businesses as well as the significant indirect benefits of a cleaner environment.
