Because water is so essential to life, Mayflower believes that everyone should have access to efficient, responsive and sustainable water and sanitation services. The two are interlinked since the primary cause of water contamination is improper sanitation. Water contamination is, of course, a major cause of disease. Inadequate water supplies are, therefore, a cause and effect of poverty.
Mayflower hopes to raise US$400,000 per annum for a period of 5 years to provide Urban Water Management programmes in Ebute-Metta. Similarly with waste and sanitation programmes, it is hoped that per annum up to 20,000 people in the community will be directly impacted. Although small, there will be a direct financial benefit per person if only, for example, from a reduced need for medicines to cure common sanitation driven health problems.
